Primal Scream & Kate Moss - Some Velvet Morning (Epic)
release date: 10 November 2003
Off their fabulous stocking filler compiliation Dirty Hits, Some Velvet Morning is a cover of the Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra hit of yore. It's not an obvious choice of single for the Scream - it's the nearest to pop the current incarnation will get - and it's not quite up there with their greatest tunes.
Hazelwood's seedy growl was balanced with Nancy's sweetness and light. Here, both Bob & Kate are as bad as each other on the hard living stakes so the chemistry is unsettled. Bobby takes on Hazelwood's vocal, forgets half the original words and gives it some vague eurosex pant, with Kate doing her rock chicky thing, as if hanging off every Tom, Dick or Bobby who's ever held a guitar the right way up wasn't enough to suggest she likes to appear sexy and dangerous around musicians.
Sexiness of a sort is on offer, although it may not quite make you want to slide erotically down a pole - more a bend down suggestively to fill the dishwasher in some tight-ish tracksuit bottoms type sexiness. Slinky.
