Primal Scream - Dolls (Sweet Rock N Roll) (Columbia)
UK release date: 7 August 2006
Only Primal Scream could use a sub-title like Sweet Rock'n'Roll and get away with it. They're only the only band who could have a refrain like "we're gonna have a gooood time" and not make it sound like an appallingly cliched Black Crowes tribute act.
Dolls picks up from where previous single Country Girl left us - big, dumb rock music that's not pretending to deliver a message or make you think, just to reinforce Bobby Gillepsie's mob as a Rolling Stones for the 21st century. The guitar riff is pure Keef, while in The Kills' Alison Mosshart, Gillespsie has found a much better female vocal foil than Kate Moss could ever have hoped to have been.
It may be totally devoid of the experimental edge of the Xterminator days but, as Gillepsie says, you'll certainly have a "goood time". For those who say they'd rather listen to the real Rolling Stones - have you even heard A Bigger Bang?
