The Puppini Sisters are one of the more puzzling acts to have emerged in 2006. Are they being ironic? Is this trad-jazz for the 21st Century done with a knowing wink, or are they actually being serious? It's hard to work them out.
As it's that time of the year, the trio have decided to record two Christmas carols in their own inimitable style. Jingle Bells is given the jazz treatment, complete with scat singing and brass section, while Silent Night is given a rather more traditional, country-ish setting. Both songs are fun and lightweight, and will no doubt make any Christmas party go with a swing.
The trouble is that it's all a bit too cheesy and kitsch for its own good. Obviously Christmas singles have a limited shelf-life anyway, but there's a definite feeling here that the joke is wearing rather thin. Buy it if you must, but The Pipettes do this kind of thing a whole lot better.
