The return of Queens Of The Stone Age was always going to be closely watched following news that bassist Nick Oliveri had departed, and the first single Little Sister certainly calmed a few fan-boy nerves on release.
In My Head, the second single from the album Lullabies To Paralyze is a nice display of what makes Queens great; mellow stoner rock with crunching guitars and ear piercing drums. The absence of Oliveri and Dave Grohl is not as hard felt as you might have expected on the track, and fans who expected an end for the band can breathe easy for now. The problem is that this is certainly not the band at their best. Even at the relatively short four minutes the single suffers from a repetitive feel, with a hook that just doesn't quite catch on like it should.
It was always going to struggle to match anything on the mind-blowing Songs For The Deaf, but it easily could have been so much more. This does, however, serve as a nice introduction to the band and is certainly not a song to be ashamed of.
