Rock bands just don't seem to do things on a grand scale these days. Double albums, concept records and the like are getting rarer, while the last band I can remember putting two releases out on the same day was Guns 'n' Roses back when they still did things like releasing albums. OK, so releasing two singles at the same time is hardly as opulent but at least it's a little bit rock 'n' roll, albeit on a small scale.
Sick Sick Sick is a download only single and acts as a precursor to the forthcoming album Era Vulgaris. It would seem that things are back to normal in the Queens camp. Having been roundly disappointed with Lullabies To Paralyse I for one felt that the lack of bass loon Nick Oliveri had taken some of the edge off of their attack and that Josh Homme had started to write soft flabby tunes that had none of the spark of tracks like Regular John or Feel Good Hit of The Summer. In my eyes at least when Lullabies came out it was more Annus Horribilis than Era Vulgaris (and be honest Era Vulgaris sounds far better, and probably requires less cream).
Sick Sick Sick feels like a return to form with a simple riff scraping out the very basics of a tune while the rest of the song sounds like it was recorded by a band full of punk androids.
Utterly basic, almost robotic, and most importantly fun (I know how that sounds) the Queens of The Stone Age have regained some of their fire.
