Quickspace - Pissed Off Boy

buy music

A Pissed Off Boy eh? That'll be strangulated guitars, simple punk back beat drums, and vocals that owe more than a slight debt to John Lydon then. There really is little more to be said for Quickspace, both Pissed Off Boy and B-side Arse Is On Fire are generic, and, it must be said terribly dated.

It's not that Quickspace haven't come up with the goods before - they're veterans of several Peel Sessions, and they released the acclaimed Death Of Quickspace album. They've been mentioned in the same breath as the likes of The Fall, Stereolab, and Slint, but this single sounds tired, throwaway and nothing like those they've been compared to. There is nothing here to match the class of They Shoot Horse Don't They from their Death… album, and any subtlety that the band used to possess appears to have disappeared.

The fact that this is being mooted as possibly being the band's parting shot makes a lot of sense, as it would appear that the band have lost their way. Those who find Quickspace by way of this single should dig deeper though, because this band has (or had?) a lot more to offer than these two tracks suggest.
