Compared to fellow New Yorkers like Vampire Weekend and MGMT, Ra Ra Riot seem to have slipped under the critical radar somewhat.
Which is a crying shame, as their debut album The Rhumb Line is one of 2008's finest releases and Can You Tell is the perfect distillation of why they're so good. A small string section sways the song along nicely, with vocalist Wes Miles injecting just the right amount of heartfelt vulnerability into lyrics like "It's hard to stay cool when you smile at me, and I get nervous every time you speak".
Just lovely, and tailormade for those 'poignant' moments on US television dramas. The only quibble would be why it's being released now - as it's sadly destined to be buried amongst the glut of Christmas single releases.
