The thing about The Rakes is you can be pretty sure of what you’re going to get. Rambunctious, infectious pop punk with a wry Cockney twist. It’s how that package is wrapped that keeps things interesting.

This, the second offering from The Rakes second LP, Ten New Messages, is built around a spiky guitar riff, a dirty, throbbing bassline, and the mass of vocal hooks that we’ve become conditioned to with the dry musings of Alan Donohoe on city life.

To say that this song is one of ten new messages is perhaps debatable. The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect could happily sit next to anything on the debut album, Capture/Release. If anything, The Rakes sound more refined, and Donohoe more wistful. That said, this is ample evidence of The Rakes continuing lo-fi suave and ability to write instantly addictive dirty pop punk goodness.
