The Rapture - W.A.Y.U.H (People Dont Dance No More) (Mercury)
UK release date: 27 November 2006
Ah the cowbell, most innocuous of instruments. The Rapture return and remind us that this simple little bell can be put to the filthiest of uses, namely their own brand of electro-dance-punk-disco-rock, and to tell us that People Don't Dance No More. Behold, New-Rave indie kids, The Rapture are back to show you how to have a real party.
So, logically following the 'its all coming round again' phase, we've had The Libertines and The Strokes, a repackaging of 60s/70s guitar based pop, and now we find ourselves in the 'New-Rave' era. Any indie fashionista on the street will tell you about it, a rethinking of the late 80s, early 90s Rave scene championed by the likes of Klaxons, Shit Disco and Robots in Disguise. But hold on a minute, haven't we heard of indie-dance before?
Ah, yes. The Rapture. Achingly cool New York outfit who opened the doors for the mixing of dance and guitar music. Arriving in 2003 with their album Echoes, they represented something fresh and interesting, forerunners of both the post-punk movement and New-Rave. And now they're back with new single W.A.Y.U.H (People Don't Dance No More).
Present and correct are all the instantly recognisable ingredients. Cowbell? Check. Driving funk-tinged bass? Check. But this isn't just a rehash of old material, yes you can tell its The Rapture immediately, but they've evolved. Gone is the sparse repetitiveness, replaced instead with a cacophony of samples. However, this is still a guitar based song at heart and the spiky, punk rhythms accompany the laconic vocals wonderfully. The Rapture still have it. Whatever 'it' might be. But they make me smile and nod my head, and I can't ask for more than that.
