Ray J is the younger brother of R&B diva Brandy and has the benefit of heavyweight producer Rodney Jerkins behind his single One Wish. It's already been a big hit in America, and will no doubt be heard blasting from the tinted windows of many a souped-up Vauxhall Nova over the next few months.

One Wish is a pretty, soulful ballad but is ruined almost immediately by Ray J's vocals. If it's not bad enough that he begins with a cringeworthy spoken intro, he then bursts into a bizarre vocal scale when the verse kicks in. Up and down go his vocals as if Ray's desperate to prove just what a great singer is. The effect is immensely irritating, and it's not helped by the cliched lyrics begging for his former love to give him another chance, reaching a nadir when he offers to check himself into a clinic if she doesn't come back to him. Hmmm, does the word 'stalker' mean anything to you, Ray?

The remix, featuring Faboblous, is slightly more bearable as Ray doesn't go overboard on his vocal tricks, but it's all territory that's been heavily covered by Usher, Mario and countless other R&B crooners. It's almost enough to make you want to reach for a Craig David record. Almost, mind.
