The Research - I Think She's The One I Love (This Is Fake DIY)
UK release date: 20 October 2008
The Research's debut album, Breaking Up, was one of those low-key gems that only a few people really got. Maybe it was the cheap, tinny keyboard, or maybe it was the sheer tweeness of it all. Yet there was something rather sweet and endearing about it all.
For the follow up, the Wakefield trio have dumped the cheap Casio-soundalike, and beefed up their sound somewhat. I Think She's The One I Love is almost cinematic in its sound compared to its predecessor, with a big string section, some gorgeous backing vocals and the fragile voice of Russell THE DISASTER (quite why it's capitals is anyone's guess) just about holding it all together.
One thing hasn't changed though, and that's their unashamed tweeness - the lovelorn wistfulness on display here will make you either want to give them a big hug or tell them to man the hell up. Unless you've had a really hard day though, you'll probably just go with the hug. A lovely little comeback from the West Yorkshire boy and girls.
