The word is that Richard Ashcroft's new material is a return to form following positive reviews for his recent live shows - a return to the stage following a lengthy absence.
However, new single Break the Night With Colour is predictably another dreary ballad. It's relatively inoffensive but sadly fails to be memorable. The song's A-list status on Radio 2 suggests just how Ashcroft's fanbase has transformed.
The teens and twenty-somethings who followed The Verve at the height of their success have grown up. And this is the sort of song that serves as a suitable accompaniment to banal small talk at bland thirty-something dinner parties in neutral-coloured Ikea clad apartments. Ashcroft has found a formula that works for his more mature audience and has stuck to it with this comeback single.
