The Queen Of Sheba, the recent Royle Family one-off special, was a mesmerising masterclass in televisual brilliance and a welcome return to the greatest sitcom of its generation. So how to follow that? Well, Ricky Tomlinson has donned Jim's dirty vest to 'treat' us all to a seasonal ditty, using his legendary character's legacy to line his own pockets.
You'll want to hate this, but, infuriatingly, it's sort of lovable - in a cheap novelty kinda way. Parodying Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody, it has all the miserable cynicism you'd expect from a Jim Royle song about Christmas. And yes, it is funny, if only for about two listens - which sure beats Bo Selecta's risible efforts. It's hard to hold a grudge against a guy like Tomlinson, and perhaps he deserves his bit of fun. It's hardly gonna sell bucketloads anyway, and the words "raise a glass and sing Christmas, my arse!" are at least a refreshing change from the usual schmaltzy nonsense.
A cash-in, maybe, but as festive novelty offerings go, it's hardly the Crazy Frog, for which we should all be grateful.
