In these post Franz days, you don't see a great deal of reviews of new bands without the words 'angular', 'clipped' or 'danceable' getting in there somewhere. I'm afraid this review is no exception - but only in its total contradiction of these current buzzwords.
Replace 'angular' with 'bouncy', substitute 'clipped' for 'shimmering', throw in a little bit of The Jam and a touch of garrulous Libertines punk and you're halfway to understanding the sound of The Rifles. Their particular brand of mod-ish energy isn't so much about being 'danceable', but more designed for going pogo-crazy: The tune barrels along at breakneck speed with its rippling speed riff and gloriously English lyrics about the weather, lads and a childhood sweetheart.
Local Boy sees former Lightning Seed Ian Broudie on production duties and is released on the band's own label. This still sounds like a pretty rough cut, but it offers a hugely promising glimpse of a band who might well take the charts, the radio and the indie-discos by storm.
