The fourth single from Miss Umbrella's Good Girl Gone Bad album further establishes Rihanna as a consummate pop queen. Having found success in RnB and rock, she’s now having a go conquering dance music.
A colossal, club-ready bass line and a lethal hook leads the story of mutual attraction between a young lady and a young man whose eyes meet across a crowded dance-floor. Not the most original concept but the song is actually more about her love affair with music. "DJ let it play, I just can't refuse it, like the way you do this. Keep on rockin' to it".
Rihanna's sharp vocals stream on top of hypnotic synth work courtesy of Stargate. They have sampled Wanna Be Startin' Something, a homage to Michael Jackson's 25-year old Thriller album. The ethno-centric "Ma Ma Se, Ma Ma Sa, Ma Ma Coo Sa" as well as his idiosyncratic, explosive yelps provide backing vocals and bring a little retro magic to the proceedings.
This will surely be one of the best pop songs of the year, an early strike for 2007’s Diva.
