The Ripps' new single, Loco, is an unashamedly poppy assault on the charts. This quick fire pop tune begins with a Kim Deal style riff that sends expectations skyrocketing. Unfortunately the rest of the track is an energetic child of a song, rather than a rocked-up old geezer bearing his teeth- It's what would happen if McFly ever got hold of a copy of Dolittle.
The B side is a competent cover of The Specials' Too Much Too Young, but it feels like a soft target to cover and does little to save the fact that the A side uncomfortably straddles the fine line between irritatingly catchy and just irritating.
Before I go off on a guilt trip about tearing into this I should say that The Ripps seem like they have potential (they certainly have bags of energy) but this single isn't much of a calling card. If Loco was a drink it would be Sunny D, rather than JD. At the moment it sounds like their creative juices just need a little more time to ferment.
