The Swedish pop princess who's doing-it-herself these days tries again with this infectious track lifted from her current Robyn album.
At times her vocals are reminiscent of Kate Bush as they sweep along over a relentless drumbeat backed with layers of electro-goodness and some heavy strings. She's really gone all out to put some emotion and heart into a flagging electropop genre, and this sorrowful song is a perfect accompaniment to this sad excuse of a summer.
It doesn't quite get out of third gear as two minutes in, the melody is interrupted by a string arrangement when perhaps it could have carried on building up to an explosive climax. But perhaps that would've been too predictable. In fact, it kind of suits the melancholy nature of the song for it to not head for orbit. In any case there are enough decent remixes tagged on to the single to keep everybody happy. Or sad, if you manage to catch the most tear-inducing pop video since The Spice Girls found themselves trapped in a Rubik's Cube (and who let them out anyway?).
With Every Heartbeat deserves to be and is looking like it could very well be Robyn's first UK hit for ten years. Which would be a great show of defiance by a talented songwriter who wouldn't be told what to do by her previous record company.
