The Rumble Strips - Cardboard Coloured Dreams (Fallout)
UK release date: 20 November 2006
It's nearing the end of the year, and the more forward thinking among us aren't compiling a list of this years best stuff. Nope, we're sat around figuring out what the big things of next year are going to be, and somewhere on that list are The Rumble Strips.
They've already got a swell of support behind them, having already released two singles on the label that can do no wrong, Transgressive. Cardboard Coloured Dreams looks set to increase that support considerably.
The Rumble Strips don't sound like anyone else out there at the moment, which is something of a relief. There's no Emo here, and no knocked off New Wave riffing, yet one quick listen to this EP and you'll be in familiar territory within seconds. Over the course of the four songs here we get brass led choruses, Van Morrison styled arrangements, hints of Roy Orbison (on Running Away), and in High Street Heaven the influences of Eddie Cochran and Rocky Horror Picture Show are undeniable.
The influences might come from the dusty old closet of Rock history, but The Rumble Strips make these songs sound fresh and exciting. In today's world of music they are a breath of fresh air.
