Tongue in cheek is perhaps not quite the best way to describe thisjaunty little effort. Not least because it opens up so many connotations: whose cheek is the tongue in? What kind of cheek is that tongue nestled between?
Saltpeter are not a joke band, but Salena Godden and Peter Coyte do approach their music with a definite element of humour. Whether that cheapens what they do is up for you to decide, but we defy you to not love the likes of Big Bamboo or Ian Dury's Clever Bastards.
I'm Not Gay But... is never going to make a mark on radio due to its content, but it is without a doubt a pop single. It's the kind of pop single that you might find in a box of 7" singles in a charity shop perhaps stuck to The Beat's Mirror The Bathroom. The bouncy ska you'll find here has more in common with Lily Allen than it does with the two-tone bands from back in the day.
Lyrically the whole thing is pretty shallow (separating it from both two-tone and Lily Allen) treating the whole bi-curious drunken snogging issue with the maturity it perhaps deserves. The chorus gets more outings than it should, but then this is a pop song with a dirty mind so that doesn't really matter. It does become somewhat infuriating as does the entire song after more than three listens.
I'm Not Gay But... is good fun while it lasts, but ultimately is something you might regret. Not unlike that drunken snog you had the other night.
