Sarabeth Tucek, the New York singer/songwriter, Bob Dylan opening, Bill Callahan supported, Brian Jonestown Massacre contributor, whose self-titled album came out early last year has been much lauded in the press and public.
Don't be phased by the '60s-tainted, west-coast, psych-folk sound that the track starts with. Nor should one disparage her dulcet, dime-a-dozen, soft singing or take it too lightly. Behind that façade lies a sharp tongue. It is rare to hear opening lines quite as cutting as: "When you think you're all alone in the world, If you think you've never, ever been heard, it's probably right ‘cause nobody cares as much as you do". Dark stuff!
The lady and her guitar send out an energetic moment of social commentary. But despite being very clear on her point on loneliness the unobtrusive and innocuous melody could mean you miss the message. The would-be compelling, shadowy simplicity is buoyed by her humour but in essence one wonders who will care about this latest effort.
