Seether Featuring Amy Lee - Broken (Wind-Up)

UK release date: 30 August 2004
Seether Featuring Amy Lee - Broken

Seether are one of a long list of bands who mean next to nothing in the UK but whose brand of earnest, power chord-laden hard rock (think Creed, Staind, Puddle Of Mudd) goes down a veritable storm in the US. Their debut album Disclaimer has gone gold over there, which is all the more impressive considering they're actually from South Africa.

Broken may be the song that sees them turn a few heads on this side of The Pond, especially as it's been re-recorded with one Amy Lee - the driving force behind multi-platinum, goth/nu-metallers Evanescence - on vocals. Seether vocalist Shaun Morgan and Lee are actually "dating", though it remains to be seen whether they become the John & Yoko for the hoodie-wearing generation...

Whatever, the new version of Broken is a step up from the original. It's still a pensive, album-closing rock "ballad", but the guitars are beefed up, the background strings enhance the undisputed anthem-y of the chorus, and Ms Lee's ever-powerful vocals provide a cool contrast to Morgan's standard rock baritone. The lyrics are a bit naff ("I'm broken when I'm lonesome and I don't feel right"), but if you're one of the seven million who dig Evanescence, you'll lap this up.
