Shayne Ward looks certain to stampede all over the opposition in the race for the Christmas number one. Come Christmas morning, this should be sitting pretty on top of the tree. Although it's only going to hit the shops mid-week, the momentum built up by The X-Factor should see it surge past the rest of the field with ease.

The X-Factor amounts to a ten week hour long advert for one single. If this failed to top the charts then those involved really aren't doing their jobs correctly. That BMG have chosen such a risible song to launch Shayne's career with only adds to the irony. They could have him sing a song that Westlife would reject for being to cheesy and still reach the top...hold on - that's exactly what they've done.

Shayne's vocals float across a backing track that is polished to within an inch of its life. The strings drip with sickly syrup, the massed backing vocals rise with all the subtlety of a Jim Davison punch line. In the chorus it sounds like Shayne sings "That's my ego" which would have placed an almost Dylan-esque slant on the song. Regrettably what he actually sings is far more prosaic. It's simply "That's my goal" and I guess the goal is to reach Christmas number one. A goal I am sure will be achieved.
