She being Zooey Deschanel and him being M Ward, this is a single (and indeed act) that unashamedly revisits the 60's to make sure you get your kicks.
Zooey's voice comes straight from those kinds of records that appear in American movies about DJ's who are broken hearted and spend the downtime between records blowing clouds of smoke on to their microphones and chugging on a bottle of bourbon. For evidence of this check out the b-side of this single, a stunning cover of Neil Young's Lotta Love.
But that's jumping ahead. Before the storm there used to be happier times, and those can be found on Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - the cutesy little number that soundtracks a joyful life moments before it all goes wrong and you consider listening to Neil Young. Musically it's not a million miles away from Waterloo Sunset as written by Nilsson and sung by Dusty Springfield. Deschanel's voice drips in effortless charm; you can almost hear the glint in her eye twinkling. They don't make classic pop like that anymore, except that She & Him do. God bless She & Him.
