Hailing from Wolverhampton, Shimm1 reckons he is the UK's answer to Jay-Z. Already proclaiming his album as "a landmark in UK urban music", You Get Me acts as his lairy, attitude-laced, self-aggrandising introduction, his mission statement to achieving world domination. When he says "I ain't got the muscle of 50 Cent" though, it is hard to know whether he means physically or financially, but it could just as easily apply musically.
You Get Me tries its best to fit the off-the-wall blueprint of the quirky minimal hip hop mastered by Missy Elliott and the bruising raps of Dizzee Rascal, but mistakes minimalism for a lack of direction and invention. The simplistic backing of a one note synth stab and the electronic pingpong percussion lacks the weight to maintain interest, quickly becoming monotonous. The lyrical delivery owes much to Eminem but the clever wordplay is replaced by clichéd posturing.
Having said that, this may come into its own in (d)a club setting, and it's often only one very small step from that to chart success. If enough people believe his hype and he hypnotises some more with this single - which may just happen - Shimm1 may still find his overblown dreams fulfilled.
