The Shins - Fighting In A Sack (Sub Pop)
release date: 26 July 2004
The Shins - Fighting In A Sack

Waxing lyrical about Albuquerque's finest seems to be the done thing these days (your very own OMH did it - just lookie here). With top-class offerings like Fighting In A Sack, it's impossible to resist. So much for constructive criticism.

Fighting In The Sack is fast. Very fast. James Mercer's voice (imagine a happy Rivers Cuomo) sprints daintily over a quick-yet-funky backing of jangly guitar, light, frantic drumming and even harmonica (not to mention some lovely 'bom-bom, bom-bom' backing vocals). It was recorded in Mercer's basement, and sounds every bit as good as its origins would promise.

Heck, even the b-sides are great; Baby Boomerang being the best American 12-bar blues for decades (being penned by Marc Bolan helps...), and live acoustic track New Slang is sure to be a fan favourite in next to no time. Is there a cheaper or easier way of getting into one of today's most exciting bands? I think not.
