The Shortwave Set, comprised of Andrew Petitt, Ulrike Bjorsne and David Farrell, espouse what they would have known as "Victorian Funk". Such a term could mean many things. The evidence of the Deptford band's website artwork - elegant Victoriana-type machines and brollies - and single Repeat To Fade suggests it's warm, friendly and melodic music, woozily constructed using samples and instruments retrieved from skips, markets and charity shops.

There's a seam of knowledge that says one can include just about anything in a piece if one has an ear for music, and The Shortwave Set seem to be agreeing that not everything discarded and outmoded is valueless. One man's rubbish is another man's treasure, so to speak.

That sums up Repeat To Fade. Some will love its organic sound, complete with brass, electronic drums, singalong chorus, soothing female vocals and strummed acoustic guitar, coming across like a folked-up The Avalanches track. Others will be driven to distraction by the oft-repeating chorus (which doesn't repeat to fade). Taken from the released-without-fanfare debut album The Debt Collection, it is an memorably agreeable piece of fluff that has every right to stay out of skips.
