This is the darker side of Silicone Soul,
the closing track from the Staring Into Space album.
Now as then, there's more
than a touch of Karl Hyde about Stuart
Gray's vocal, although this is sung rather than
spoken.
The tougher, acidic nature of the music is
reflected in the choice of remixers. Slam tweak
the beats up a notch and give a tech house reworking
that will doubtless find its way into one or two of
their Glasgow sets. Ewan Pearson goes one
better, adorning his mix with 80s handclaps and
synthesizers, its loping bass complementing the vocal
perfectly. Next up are Viva Stereo, starting
off as a Scissor Sisters imitation before
heading once again to the early 1980s, all clattering
drums and distorted guitars.
With nine vocal and instrumental versions
available, this release harks back to a decade ago,
when CD singles represented far better value for
money, and it does a good job of promoting the group's
upcoming spot in T In The Park's Slam Tent this
July.
