Simple Plan - Untitled (How Could This Happen To Me?) (Lava)
UK release date: 26 September 2005
The comedian's 'mask' theory suggests that those who earn a living through this medium frequently have a multitude of internal traumas and tragedies, repressed by their over the top joyful side. Tosh. But it would cast an interesting light on why so many comedy punkers choose to delve into the darkest realms of their soul and reveal the intense struggles within.
Simple Plan are the latest nauseating radio-poppers to take this 'emo' route with their untitled (although it actually has a title) release How Could This Happen To Me? Beginning with twinkling piano and overly prominent violin samples, the memory of previous singles such as Addicted is eradicated, and the Canadian 5-piece take on the new persona of mature, expressive little puppies that need to be taken care of, right?
Wrong. The lyrics of Pierre Bouvier ("I can't stand the pain", "I'm sick of this life" and "I just want to scream") fail to sound at all convincing, and the closing guitar solo sounds about as soulful as a KFC. At best sounding like Alkaline Trio on an off day, this record is a reminder to be aware of your local pop-punkers, make them feel wanted and loved, or else they throw something like this at you.
