Basement Jaxx - Where's Your Head At?

Tanya Donelly releases her 'Sleepwalk' EP through 4AD on November 19th. The single gives a good indication of what to expect from her forthcoming album 'Beauty Sleep', which 4AD plan to release in February 2002. Fans of the label will doubtless appreciate this first release from Donelly since 1997 which showcases her soaring vocal style, vaguely country sound and mature approach to songwriting. It features a whole host of collaborators, including current and former members of Buffalo Tom, Juliana Hatfield 3, Throwing Muses and Frank Black and the Catholics. 'After Your Party' sounds strikingly close to some of Stephin Merritt's recent output, or even something that would be at home on a Kristin Hersh album. A lovely, whimsical record that should be in your collection. (MH) BUY Tanya Donelly - 'Sleepwalk EP'

Starsailor release 'Lullaby' on EMI: Chrysalis on 10th December, another single from their outstanding debut album 'Love Is Here'. 'From A Whisper To A Scream' and 'Tie Up My Hands' follow the main song which features whimsical piano underpinning James Walsh's increasingly familiar acrobatic vocals and a melody that just sticks in your head and refuses to leave. Already on Radio 1's A List, this is sure to follow their previous two top 20 hits up the charts and on to success. (MH)

Middlerow, best known so far as the chaps who remixed 'Clint Eastwood' by Gorillaz for the dance floor, release their new single 'Today's The Day', on December 3rd through CoolTempo/Middlerow. The beat is instantly recognisable, for it is very similar to that of their 'Clint Eastwood' remix. Rap comes from "ragga legend" Sweetie Irie and "veteran rapper" Spee, with beats and toons from Carl H and Ed Case. It is the sound of London, 2001; UK garage at its poppiest, most accessible best. The Avalanches release their third single from the defining summertime album 'Since I Left You' on December 3rd. Out on XL Recordings, the 'Electricity' EP features no less than five remixes of the album version. The last two singles ('Since I Left You' and 'Frontier Psychiatrist') went top 20 in the UK. If you are already familiar with the Aussie boys' sample blending to create new songs from old (and if you aren't then welcome back to Earth; was your holiday on Pluto worth all that flight time?), this single will slot nicely into the compartment in your head labelled "fun, disco-based fluffiness tempered with inventive use of musical technology". What do you mean, you haven't got a compartment called anything like that? Tch. (MH) BUY The Avalanches - 'Electricity'

Drowsy release 'Harmless' on December 10th through Fat Cat Records, the label who gave us Sigur Ros. Mauri H, a 19 year old from Finland, is the man responsible for this demoesque single which sounds like somebody forgot to turn his microphone on. The record also exposes his melancholic, piano-based songwriting talent, however. There are occasional Beck-esque tendancies (especially in 'Careless Me') and, with 'Shaa', he sounds like a spaced-out Badly Drawn Boy. There are *almost* tunes here, but the production is so bad that one can't even hear which language he sings in. Maybe the CD I heard was a dud or something, but let's hear him recorded properly next time. (MH)

Xlnlisupreme release 'All You Need Is Love Was Not True' on December 10th on Fat Cat Records. It somewhat confused us, for the main track sounds like the sound engineer had no idea about levels. The guitar is distorted throughout over the top of a vaguely gothic drumbeat, while someone murmurs something unintelligible through it all. The second track, 'Kyora', sounds like someone trying to play thrash. "Driven by urgent, tightly controlled DMX beats," it says here, "and swathed in massive layers of caustic guitar feedback." Not likely to be a commercial success; but I guess they knew that already. The Japanese duo's "maelstrom of feedback bliss" is absolutely perfect for annoying your neighbours and blowing your speakers. (MH)

The Domes of Silence release 'Tarnished Evidence' on Shifty Disco on November 19th. A fantastic debut from a new band emerging from the vibrant Oxford scene, one listen and you will almost certainly be craving to see them 'doing it live'. Both tracks are a dirty deep throat romp drawing on a variety of good old rock n roll influences. Monstorously meaty riffs and huge chugging basslines supplemented by sleazy vocal hooks make this a gigantic forerunner to their album that is due to be seen in the new year. Top notch - lets have some more! (JM) BUY The Domes of Silence - 'Tarnished Evidence'

Favourite at the moment for the Christmas #1 on the UK singles chart is a collaboration between Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman called 'Somethin' Stupid', taken from Robbie's jazz covers album 'Swing When You're Winning'. It is released on December 10th through EMI Chrysalis. The song was originally recorded by Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1967; but for this recording we are told to "think Hepburn & Tracey, Taylor & Burton, Bogey & Bacall... and Richard & Judy!" 'Nuff said... The other tracks on the CD and cassette are an orchestral version of Robbie's hit 'Eternity' and Sinatra's 'My Way', recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall. (MH)

Kate Winslet proves that anything Nicole can do she can do better by releasing her first single without the aid of an ex-boyband stalwart - and that actresses becoming singers is suddenly fashionable again! Her first single appears on November 26th on EMI, called 'What If'. She can even sing! The track is taken from the film 'Christmas Carol' and was written and produced by Steve Mac. The film appears on December 7th in UK cinemas. (MH) BUY Kate Winslet - 'What If'

The Strokes have had an amazing year and, to cap it off, they release a new single from the gold-selling album 'Is This It', entitled 'Last Nite'. Upbeat, guitar-based pop in the manner of early Supergrass with a rougher production, their music has been getting plenty of airplay already this year and this single is bound to add to the hype. CD1 features new track 'When It Started', while CD" includes live recordings of 'Last Nite', 'Trying Your Luck' and 'Take It Or Leave It'. The single appears on Rough Trade Records on November 5th. The Cure precede their forthcoming 'best of' album (out on November 12th) with a brand new single, called 'Cut Here'. It is out on Fiction/Polydor on 29th October and features 'Signal to Noise' and two remixes of 'Cut Here'. There is, as you'd expect for a 'best of' album track, no great change of direction here, just Robert Smith and co.'s tried and tested method of selling records. The band are no longer signed to Polydor and Smith is apparently working on a solo project which may be released through their website only. Depeche Mode follow up their Ibiza hit 'I Feel Loved' with another release from the album 'Exciter', called 'Freelove', on November 5th through Mute Records. It is an unusually calm single release from a group whose electronic drama has consistently been popular since the 1980s and continues to sell out arena shows in Europe and the USA. Two versions of the single are available; CD1 comprises the Bertrand Burgalat version of 'Freelove' and two remixes; "Schlammpeitziger Little Rocking Suction Pump Version" and a DJ Muggs mix. The second CD is in fact a DVD of 'Freelove' and four live tracks, plus two live audio tracks - 'Breathe' and 'The Dead of Night'. Nerina Pallot, fresh from her sell-out moonth-long residency at London's Borderline club and a UK tour, releases another single from her acclaimed debut album, 'Dear Frustrated Superstar', on Polydor, called 'Alien'. It is a bizarre beast, sounding for all the world like what would happen if you fused Tori Amos with B*witched, but she has a good voice and a clear ability where writing pop confection is concerned. The single is out on 12th November and is featured in the new Film Four offering 'Crush', starring Andie McDowell, scheduled for released in Spring 2002. Marillion, a band who know a thing or two about harnessing the power of the internet for commercial use, offer a 'double A side' single, taken from their recent album 'Anoraknophobia', called 'Between You and Me / Map of the World'. It is out on Intact Records on October 8th. Anyone familiar with the band's previous form featuring the bizarre creation that was Fish might be interested in reappraising the band's current blend of guitars and electronics. It's all very wholesome, straightforward stuff, the kind of thing Stereophonics or Travis fans really ought to be buying, yet it sounds fresher and more original than the recent output from either of these. 'Map of the World' sounds like what would happen if you plugged the Indigo Girls into an amplifier; again, nonetheless rather good! You can only get this single at the Marillion website. Biffy Clyro offer up their second single for Beggars Banquet on October 1st, called 'Justboy'. The other tracks are 'Being Gabriel' and 'Unsubtle'. Their debut album will be out at the start of 2002 and, if you missed them live at Reading, Leeds and touring with Lift To Experience, you need to make amends! The Divine Comedy release 'Perfect Lovesong' on Parlophone on October 29th. CD1 - 'No Excuses', last heard live in Edinburgh and Aberdeen in February 2000 and 'Les Jours Tristes' a collaboration between Neil Hannon and French musician Yann Tiersen. An instrumental version of this song appears on the film Amelie, currently in cinemas across the UK. CD2 features 'Thinking The Unthinkable', also from the Scottish shows and now produced by Nigel Godrich, plus a new recording of 'Oh Yeah', a cover of the Roxy Music classic. Unusually, there is also a DVD single, featuring the video to Perfect Lovesong, a remix of it by I Monster, and 3 clips from Scottish Television's Boxed Set show from earlier this year. The clips will be excerpts of Bad Ambassador and Lost Property (both from 'Regeneration') as well as some interview footage with Neil and guitarist Ivor Talbot. Gorillaz release their third single from the platinum and eponymously titled debut album on October 22nd on Parlophone, called 'Rock the House'. The single tracklisting is - CD1: Rock The House; The Sounder; Faust; exclusive preview Rock The House animated video. CD2: Rock The House; Crowd/ Ghost Train; 19-2000 video.
Basement Jaxx release 'Just 1 Kiss' (with two remixes of same) through XL Recordings on September 24th. It features the vocals of Felix Buxton, last heard on their monster hit 'Red Alert' - and another neon-daubed primate on the cover. It is the second release from the monster selling second album, 'Rooty'. Parisian house guru Etienne de Crecy releases the sassy turntable pleaser that is 'Scratched', the second single from the album 'Tempovision', on 13th August throught XL Recordings. A co-founder of Disques Source, the label which signed Mirwais (producer of Madonna's 'Music'), Alex Gopher and Air, de Crecy offers a CD of three mixes of the single, enhanced with a Gorillaz-esque cartoon. The remixes include one of 'No Name' from Alex Gopher himself, while two 12" singles offer a variety of different mixes including one by Les Diamantaines. Belita Woods offers divaesque vocals on the main mix which, if the charts represent anything useful, should be in the top 20. Kylie Minogue precedes the release of her eighth studio album, 'Fever', with a new single called 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. Penned by sometime D-Mob vocalist Cathy Dennis, this is sure to be *the* trash pop dance anthem of the year and will surely give Posh and co. a bloody nose. The single appears on Parlophone on September 17th. Mantra Recordings, fresh from celebrating their fifth year in business, release another single by King of Woolworths, entitled 'Bakerloo', on August 20th. Two remixes appear courtesy of labelmates Saint Etienne and Ladytron for a single which is taken from the forthcoming 'Ming Star' album, out on Mantra in September. Upcoming indie favourites The Cooper Temple Clause release their new single, 'Let's Kill Music', through Morning Records on September 10th. A promo CD featuring just one of several tracks offers us a garage-produced attempt at stadium rock which ends up sounding like a cross between Stereophonics on a bad day and Mercury Rev on a good one. On August 27th, Alfie release 'You Make No Bones', taken from April's 'If You Happy With You Need Do Nothing' (sic) LP. The single and album appear on Twisted Nerve/XL. Unusually, there are two versions of the 7", with the first featuring 'Don't Be Blue' and the second including 'Ooze A Lullaby'. The CD includes 'The Reverse Midas Touch' and 'Wormwood'. Using peculiar chords, strings and vocal harmonies, a folky effect is created but one which sounds just poppy enough to sell too. Judging by their debut album's sales, they'll be doing well with this. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, who will tour Wales with the Manic Street Preachers soon, release 'Stood on Gold' on Mantra Recordings on September 3rd. It wouldn't sound out of place on the recent mini-album of acoustica that was 'The Blue Trees' but is the first single from forthcoming full-length LP 'How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart'. Unlike their generally chaotic live performances, Gorky's studio recordings are blessed with melody and charm. The country/western 'My Honey' is one of two tracks to back the 'Stood on Gold', the other being 'Out On The Side'. Meanwhile, on One Little Indian on August 6th, Bjork is releasing a new single called 'Hidden Place', the first to be taken from the forthcoming album 'Verspertine'. Displacement of time is the order of the day, with both CD singles boasting different "b" sides; including the exquisite 'Verandi'. If you like your rock rough then Romeo Trading Co. are probably for you with their debut single 'Boybands (In My Home)'. A low-key build-up to their album release in early 2002 has started, with gigs in London (L'il Backyard Club) and Leicester (Charlotte) lined up for September 19th and October 1st respectively.
Depeche Mode release the second single from their smash hit album 'Exciter', called 'I Feel Loved', on July 30th through Mute Records. Two CDs and a 12" are available and the Depeches have had their electronica remixed by the likes of Danny Tenaglia and Thomas Brinkman. CD1 is backed by a collaboration with Iggy Pop, called 'Dirt', and an extended mix of 'I Feel Loved', while CD2 features an interactive section with press photos of the band, video clips and three remixes of the single. Australian sampling gurus The Avalaches follow up their smash hit single 'Since I Left You' on July 16th with a second single, entitled 'Frontier Psychiatrist', through XL Recordings. Backed with four remixes, it offers a wild west musical setting for psychiatric samples - "that boy needs therapy!" spoken by a doctor figure. Catch The Avalanches live at Camden's Electric Ballroom on August 8th. musicOMH.com favourites Cane 141, whom we recently interviewed, release 'New Day Parade' on Decor Records on July 16th. The backing songs are 'The Horror', featuring the American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, and 'Landing Rehearsal', "a reworking by Sean O'Hagan", he being of the High Llamas. Just like the album 'Garden Tiger Moth', the single veers from alt-country acoustica through to technologically savvy remix territory, once again showing how diverse this band's repertoire is. Richard Hawley's new single, taken from the album 'Richard Hawley', is called 'Coming Home'. It appears on Setanta Records on July 16th. 'Caned' and 'Cheap Spanish Wine' make up the backing songs. Hawley is getting good airplay on Radio 2, XFM and Radio 1 and will be appearing at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August with a complete band. For those of you who don't already know, he's been a sometime guitarist for Pulp and All Saints and his current album is his first solo effort. Check musicOMH.com soon for an interview with Richard. Those glam poppers Paleday are back on July 16th with their second single, 'Do You Ever'. Musically lying somewhere between Duran Duran and Human League, their 80s-influenced pop is happy, vocals-driven confection of the purest kind, with Anthony Stubbs and Stephen Farrier proving they know how to put together classic chart music, following their excellent set at the Mardi Gras at Finsbury Park. This single appears on Cake Records. Kings of Convenience release 'Failure' on July 9th... this band are rapidly becoming the Kings of Alt-Country as well as convenience and this is another beautifully crafted acoustic number from the current album, 'Quiet Is The New Loud' (Source). 'I Don't Know What I Can Save You From', 'Eternal' and 'Free Fallin' join various remixes and the video form the remaining track listing.
Basement Jaxx release 'Romeo' in June on XL Recordings, from their new album 'Rooty'. A radio edit is followed by 'Bongoloid', which is guaranteed to get the house moving. R&B sensation Kele Le Roc offers suitably feminine vocals which contrast well with the driving house beat. 'Camberwell Skies: Demo Mix' rounds off the three tracks. Appliance offer 'A Gentle Cycle Revolution', taken from new album 'Imperial Metric'. A curious mix of Spiritualized vocalisations and Kraftwerkesque electronica, hanging off solid tunes, produces an effect not that dissimilar from some of Pulp's 'Intro'. 'FLF [Precious Bodily Fluids]', from the album, and 'Homing Devices', a new track, round off the CD, out on Mute Records on June 25th. Radiohead release 'Pyramid Song' on Parlophone on May 21st - expect the hallmarks of Radioheadishness; off-the-wall time signatures, groaning Thom Yorke vocals, unintelligible lyrics. Coz that's what you get. What's more, it is the most insidious single to appear this month - you'll think it to be miserablist nonsense on the first listen, then it will refuse to leave your brain. If you bought last year's 'Kid A' then you will know what to expect from this single and the new album, 'Amnesiac', recorded at the same time. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds release 'Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow' on Mute on 21st May. It is the second single to be taken from the brilliant new album 'No More Shall We Part' and follows the chart success of 'As I Sat Sadly By Her Side' - which reached an excruciating no.41. Better luck this time, Nick... South are back with their second single from debut album 'From Here On In', called 'Keep Close'. It sounds like what would happen if Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown were to make a record together, only not quite as violent. The single appears on Mo'Wax on May 21st; 'Breaking Away' and 'Wasted Reminders' are the two other tracks, neither of which are on the album. The Divine Comedy offer us the second single from new album 'Regeneration', called 'Bad Ambassador', on May 14th. It will appear on Parlophone Records. Extremely quantised strings vie with Neil Hannon's voice in a fight to the finish. High point: "Gonna absail down my ivory tower and buy myself a Jaguar." Aaaah. CD1 includes two rather forgettable new tracks, the second of which sounds almost exactly like 'Obladee Oblada' and has something to do with the United States of Europe. The second CD features live recordings of 'Bad Ambassador' (much better than the album version), 'Sweden' and the Status Quo cover 'Pictures of Matchstick Men'. The limited edition 7" features a live version of 'Life On Earth', stripped bare of all orchestral fare.
Badly Drawn Boy renames a song for radio! Who would have thought it. He also joins the ranks of artists seeking film stars to galmourise their videos - following recent appearances by Christopher Walken (for Fat Boy Slim) and Alan Rickman (for Texas), BDB Damon Gough gets to sit on the edge of Joan Collins' bath. Scarily, she looks younger than he does... "I wanted to work with Damon because I consider him a very talented young man," cooes Joanie, "and I love his music. Doing this video appealed to me because of the strange juxtaposition of our two characters. I loved every minute." The single 'Spitting In The Wind', which has nothing at all to do with urine, is released on Twisted Nerve/XL on May 7th. CD 1 also features a Lemon Jelly mix of a song called 'Pissing In The Wind' and a Minotaur Shock mix of 'The Shining'. CD 2 also includes WDET Detroit mixes of 'Magic In The Air' and 'Everybody's Stalking', while the 10" includes the original album version from 'The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast' and 'The Shining'. Tea cosies rule. Anjali is back with a new offering entitled 'Nebula EP' on May 7th, on Wiiija Records. The album version of 'Nebula' plus a remix by Qualifide and a collaboration with Spykid called 'Hymn To The Sun' are all included; if you liked the exotic chillout feel of the eponymously titled album, this will not disappoint. King Of Woolworths should get a Mercury Music Prize too - for silliest band name ever. 'Stalker Song' appears on Mantra Records on 7th May and is a curious mix of break-beats and trance, interspersed with random segments of noise. A 10" features 'Minitel Conspiracy' as the B-side, while the CD also includes 'Catnip'.
Tim Wright releases 'Searcher/The Walk' on 12" on April 23rd, on Novamute. Having cut his teeth with remixes of tracks by Tim Hutton, Cristian Vogel and Laurent Garnier, he has appeared under various monikers including Germ, Tube Jerk and Sand. 'Searcher' falls somewhere between techno, breakbeat and garage. Biffy Clyro release their first single for Beggars Banquet (since parting company with Electric Honey), entitled '27', on April 9th. Who they, you may ask, but you will surely soon find out - just as soon as they finish recording their debut album. '27' also includes 'Intructio4' (sic) and 'Breatheher' (also, sic). They play guitars and are from Glasgow; but I'm sure that doesn't account for the spelling. Arrid, aka Ian Widgery, is already known as SkynetUK and has released five singles on Whoop! and around 30 remix projects. His new single, 'The Trench', appears on 30th April on Future Groove and offers up a huge meaty bass beat which will get your toes tapping and your head throbbing. Already a hit with hard house club nights at Cream and on Kiss FM, the AA side of the 12" is a mix by Desert, whose previous releases have been catching the attention of Judge Jules, Digweed, Pete Tong and Sasha, to name but a few.
'Since I Left You' from The Avalanches appears in shops on 26th March, from XL Recordings. The main track sounds alarmingly like The Jackson Five at the peak of their fame, all seventies beats and stylish guitar, boyish vocals and singalong chorus. Track 2, 'Everyday', sounds as though it has been produced by Mirwais, all vocoder and beats - and with an Andy Votel remix of 'Thank You Caroline' completing the CD, it is no wonder that the band are already being championed by Jo Whiley, Mary Ann Hobbs, Jockey Slut, The Evening Standard, 7, I-D, Mixmag, NME, The Face and, dare we say it, musicOMH.com. We look forward to hearing the album of the same name from Melbourne's finest, but 'Since I Left You' is our Single Of The Month. On 19th March "Bernard and Edwyn" release 'Message for Jojo', on Setanta Records. Who are Bernard and Edwyn? Well, surely you remember former Suede axeman turned highly successful soloist Bernard Butler, also formerly of McAlmott & Butler? This be he. The Edwyn in question is Edwyn Collins, long signed to Setanta, who has been into TV production of late and hasn't released much since the monster-selling 'Girl Like You'. So what's it like? Well... there are all sorts of electronic bleeps and bloops laid over acoustic guitar and the duetting boys' vocals. It, erm, works rather well. The remaining two tracks are no less superb, with 'Clean' sounding like the ultimate chill-out track. Great it is to hear from these two talents again; 'Message For Jojo' is musicOMH.com's Single Of The Month. Also on 19th March Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds release 'As I Sat Sadly By Her Side', their first new material since 1997. Two tracks appear with the single; Little Janey's Gone and Good Good Day, neither of which are available on the forthcoming album 'No More Shall We Part'. Cave's voice has developed since he's been away - and the single shows that his range is even more astonishing than it already was. A new single from Add N To (X), called 'The Poker Roll', appears from Mute Records on March 5th. Bonus tracks 'White Scrapie' and 'Wax Gravy' are born of collaboration with Jon Spencer, lynchpin of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and brother of Brassy's Muffin Spencer. The cover has a sticker proclaiming the existence of an "explicit video", shot by the band's Barry 7, which features all manner of nipples, dildos and curious camera speeds. Finally, on March 5th, David Gray releases another single from 'White Ladder', called 'This Year's Love', one of the album's more beautiful tracks, on EastWest Records. It has already been in a film of the same name starring Kathy Burke and it finds Gray sat at a piano trying desperately not to sound or look like Elton John. Great stuff.
On February 26th, The Divine Comedy release their first record on Parlophone Records, entitled 'Love What You Do'. Definitely a grower, this piece features a beautiful and memorable chorus with Neil Hannon's vocals once again reminding us of how good he can be. 'Love What You Do' is the first single to be taken from forthcoming album 'Regeneration', out on March 12th. For more information on The Divine Comedy click here. This is our Single Of The Month. Goldfrapp - HumanCristian Vogel, a Chilean DJ, makes a bid for your money on the same day with his new single, 'La Isla Piscola', taken from last September's 'Rescate 137' album. Four versions of the track appear on the single, as does a video to the last single, somewhat oddly, 'Whipaspank'. Like Chilean white wine, Vogel is damned good at mixing bongos, weird synth sounds looped and random samples and he produces a sound that has more in common with Max Tundra and Etienne De Crecy than with techno and trance DJs such as Oakenfold and Van Dyk. It can be danced to, though! The single and the album are available on Novamute Records. Meanwhile, bucking the trend for 26th Feb and releasing a debut single also for Novamute is 2nd Gen, with a piece of distorted electronic angst called 'And/Or', from the forthcoming debut album 'Irony Is' (preview coming soon). Wajid Yaseen, for 2nd Gen is he, has played bass for Fun:Da:Mental and is the son of a devotional singer, but his musical style is really like neither of these. Dalek provides vocals for one of the remixes on the single. Also released in February is South's 'Paint The Silence', on MoWax Records. This is the band's first full release single and precedes the debut album. A remix by U.N.K.L.E. is included on the CD. More soon... To buy any of these singles, enter the band name in the box at the top left of this screen.
The Frank and Walters will be releasing 'Underground' from the album 'Glass' on Setanta Records on 15th January and features a Sean O'Hagan remix and a video! For more information on The Frank and Walters, check out their official website. Also look out for Etienne De Crecy's 'Am I Wrong', released on 8th January on XL Recordings. It is the stand-out track from recent album 'Tempovision' and is rather boppy, we find. Saint Etienne are also releasing a single on January 8th, on Mantra Recordings, which will feature a Paul Van Dyk remix among other delights. Finally, already out (Jan 1st!) is Mirwais's 'Naive Song'. Known to most as the producer of most of Madonna's 'Music' album, Mirwais offers mroe of the same flangey effects and tehcno beats to excellent and uplifting effect. The single features a stomping remix by house guru Dave Clarke and is available on Epic Records.
December is traditionally the month of the worst excesses of the record industry, from Teletubbies to Mel Smith and Kim Wilde, complete with bells. Consequently, good singles are this month _very_ thin on the ground. That said, an excellent cover version of The Four Tops' 'What Is A Man' appears on December 4th, on Beggars Banquet, from the wonderful Tindersticks, fresh from changing labels. The track is being used for the new BBC drama starring Pete Postlethwaite, entitled 'The Sins'.
Single of the Month goes to....... BADLY DRAWN BOY, with a reissue of 'Once Around The Block' on Twisted Nerve/XL on 13th November. (MH) Violet Indiana's 'Choke EP', on Bella Union, appears on 6th November and is also rather fine. (MH) Melys - 'Un Darllenwr Lwcus' (Sylem), is out November 6th. All three tracks have an a divine dark beauty about them, Paul Adams' inspiring and thought provoking lyrics falling like summer rain from Andi Parker's mouth. The title track is a battle of wills combining Welsh and English lyrics; 'what the hell did she say?' providing a highly appropriate hook. 'All Played Out' is the most moving 'Dear John' ever penned and 'Beautiful Breakdown' is a sad account of devotion dealing with adversity, a mini kitchen sink drama which descends into powerful orchestration before breaking through to hope. On November 20th, Thievery Corporation release the rather fine single that is 'Shadows Of Ourselves' (4AD). An excellent set of four tracks for playing in a dimly-lit, warm, comfortable room. (MH) Swell offer us a "maxi-EP" called 'Feed' on 27th November on Beggars Banquet. The EP is the forerunner of a new full-length album from the band, set for release in the spring. Likened to Grandaddy and Gomez, both of whom they predate, Swell are about to unleash their first material since 1998. (MH)
On account of the fact we love them, Brassy's, 'Play Some D', out on Wiiija Records on October 16th, is musicOMH.com's single of the month. It is the final single (of four) to be taken from the album 'Got It Made'. Following rave reviews, Brassy's star is rising fast. 'Play Some D' appears with no less than five tracks - the album version, DJ Swett's remix of the same, The Nextmen's reworking of 'B'Cos We Rock', Rob Swift's reordering of 'I Can't Wait' and DJ Assault's take on 'Work It Out'. It's even good value for money then! Also on October 16th, the wonderful Hefner are back, with the second single from current album 'We Love The City' (also out on October 16th!), called 'The Greedy Ugly People', on Too Pure Records. It showcases the band's fusing of happy-go-lucky indie music with highly politicised lyrics. A forthcoming tour should prove a treat. A little later, on October 30th, Lupine Howl release their debut single on Beggars Banquet, called '125'. The cover art depicts a First Great Western InterCity 125 train, similar to the one which crashed at Ladbroke Grove so disasterously last year, merged with lots of banknotes. If cover art were to be a guarantor of success then Lupine Howl, currently at work on Massive Attack's next album as well as their own and shrugging off the shadow of their past in the form of Spiritualized, should be mega. We think that the quite delicious Venini will be releasing their third single, called 'Un Shaker', in October on Sturdy Records. If you can lay your hands on a copy then do - it is FAB. The Nectarine No. 9 release 'Constellations Of A Vanity' on October 9th on Beggars Banquet. The accompanying tracks are among the most ambitious we've heard in some time. Due to our scanner feeling less than well, no pictures are available just yet. Check back soon though!
A big batch of great toons have arrived @ musicOMH.com for September, but the best single has to go this month to Mojave3, who release 'Return To Sender' on September 25th. Taken from the very fine third album 'Excuses For Travellers', this is seminal campfire singalong stuff from Neil Halstead and his melodic acoustic chums. The single is released on 4AD Records. Also in September, how can we neglect to mention the band that those bastions of fashion Wallpaper* and JockeySlut have been praising - that would be Muki. They release 'I Don't Wanna Know' to an audience of people recently returned from Ibiza who must appreciate Everything But The Girl's 1995 collaboration with Todd Terry, 'Missing', to really understand where Muki are coming from. 'Missing' got to number 2 in the singles chart back then with a catchy clubby toon... who would bet against Muki doing likewise? 'I Don't Wanna Know' is released on Mantra Records and is taken from the album 'Quiet Riot'. Whistler release 'Happiness' on September 4th and follow that up with a batch of gigs in London and the UK. The title flatters to deceive as the music is anything but happy. 'Happiness' comes to us from Wiiija Records. Also on September 4th, Nigo releases 'Freediving' through MoWax Records. Three versions of the Japanese's guitar-led lo-fi single appear on the CD, the last of which is a remix by none other than Stereo MCs. Who could forget one of the undoubted stars of the summer already, Badly Drawn Boy? Heading into an extensive UK tour, Damon Gough, with a little musical backup from his Manchester friends Doves, releases 'Disillusion' from the album 'The Hour Of Bewilderbeast' on Twisted Nerve through XL Recordings on September 4th. The single is available on two CD formats or 10" vinyl. Llama Farmers release 'Snow White' on 25th September. Finally, in a last-but-not-least kinda way, Maxim releases a second single from his forthcoming debut album 'Hell's Kitchen' on September 11th, called 'Scheming'. The track, featuring vocals from Trina Allen and with two remixes rounding off the CD, was produced by Maxim and labelmate Liam Howlett, better known as part of XL Recordings labelmates The Prodigy. The album is due for release in October.
On Too Pure Records is 'Good Fruit', a great little number from Hefner on 14th August in a record shop near you (including musicOMH.com, of course!). Taken from the equally wonderful forthcoming album 'We Love The City' (preview to follow), the single precludes a nationwide UK tour by the band, including the V2000 festival. Paleday have put back the release of their debut single 'High' (again), this time until 21st August. It is August and everyone is on holiday. September promises a deluge... if you want us to preview your single please let us know in plenty of time!
Our pick of July singles is Sgt. Rock's 'We're In Heaven EP' (Wiiija Records), taken from the forthcoming album 'Live The Dream' (previewed here). It is a wonderfully uplifting record to start winding the audience into a 4am trance. The sleeve even looks like it could get you high, being of a Rizla king size appearance... It can all be yours from 10th July onwards, with the album following on 24th July. Continuing a theme, 24th July should also, we hope, see the long-awaited debut single from Paleday released. It is called 'High (Getting Over)' and is released through Cake/BMG. Keep a lookout on musicOMH.com for an exclusive interview with the band who liken themselves to The Pet Shop Boys and have been likened to Jamiroquoi and Brand New Heavies. Also, out on July 3rd, the second single from Black Box Recorder's 'The Facts Of Life' album, 'The Art Of Driving', with a remix of the top 20 single 'The Facts Of Life' by Chocolate Layers (Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey from Pulp). Two CD versions, a tape and a 7". You lucky people. Go to our Black Box Recorder microsite here. So far we are a bit thin on the ground for really good July releases. Feel free to let us know if an exceptional single comes your way!
Our single of the month for June 2000 is 'Horns Front' by The Drum, taken from their recent album 'Diskin'. The single is available on Mantra Records from June 5th. The single sounds in places like Placebo, with a big guitar noise and highly quantised production. The band will be touring the UK in the coming weeks, including the London Astoria on June 2nd. Buy the CD single now - search for "drum" in the search box in the top left of this web page. Runners-up Saint Etienne - 'Heart Failed In The Back Of A Taxi' (Mantra) - release date: June 12th The second single release from Saint Etienne's current album, itself in the UK top 40, 'Heart Failed In The Back Of A Taxi' drips coolness and finds Sarah Cracknell's whispering vocals as captivating as ever. Buy the CD single now - search for "saint etienne" in the search box in the top left of this web page.
