From the first guitar riff (a brief snatch of Dick Dale guitar gunfire), SixNationState grab you and hustles you along to its barrio rock beat for a couple of minutes then drops you, panting.
Artful and accomplished and bursting with energy, they manage to sound spontaneous and just jagged enough around the edges to balance the tight arrangements. From the tracks that round out this package it seems SixNationState like playing any sort of music so long as its the sort of frenetic noise that'll have you jumping up and down.
They skirmish with ska during the verses on Taking Me Over before breaking into a whooping chorus, while Country Song (not available on the vinyl version) is the sort of jaunty number The Coral could tackle if they were a little less limp. Lead singer Gerry (his surname seems to be a bit of a secret!) has a standout voice, sounding like he's been licking ashtrays and is on the brink of losing it when he really gets going. All in all a very promising taster of what lies in store on their album, due early next year.
