Skinnyman - No Big Ting (Lowlife)
UK release date: 13 September 2004
Skinnyman - No Big Ting
Starting off with a vocal that sounds like a smurf on helium, No Big Ting sounds like it's going to erupt into one of those poppy Ibiza anthems. Instead, what follows is a man who could be likened to a gritty Ali G.

Despite my initial reservations the single turns out to be distinctive and smacking of a possible hit, laced as it is with pronounced hip hop rapping, slow punctuated beats and a ghostly violin orchestra. Not for nothing is Skinnyman one of the most highly regarded rap artists on the UK scene.

However the B-Side Council Estate Of Mind, titletrack off Skinnyman's debut album, is your typical "I'm going to sing about the devastation of drugs in my hood" type song. Although he may be documenting his own experiences, the track is riddled with cringing cliches that lean towards the farcical. An urban poet this man certainly isn't.
