Scotland is one of the few regions of the UK where a thriving house music
scene still exists and Slam, the duo responsible for Glasgow-based dance
label Soma, are a key feature of that scene.
Their single, Kill The Pain, is certainly value for money with five mixes
of the track on the CD, but why they released it at all is the real question
here - their music is far better suited to the confines of Glasgow's club
scene rather than the top ten. The original mix is pleasant enough thanks to
the ever-ethereal tones of Dot Allison, creating a haunting and dreamy
sound, but if it's a bid for commerciability it somehow falls flat.
The other four mixes, some of which are barely recognisable from the
original track, represent what Glasgow's clubbers come to expect from this
duo - repetitive beats and thumping basslines. And who knows? Perhaps after a
night of hardcore clubbing, the soothing sounds of Allison will aid the most
miserable of comedown.
