Watch out, City of Blinding Lights! Political campaign and sports venue managers everywhere are surely scrambling to update their playlists to accommodate the new contender for the accessibility, familiarity, and ubiquitousness crown - namely, Take Back the City, the anthemic first single from alternative rockers Snow Patrol's upcoming, fifth album A Hundred Million Suns.
It's a (insert your favorite metropolis here) rally cry for the masses, expressing humility and pride for the "mess," "cracks," and "fun" for which they are "gluttons," and willing to "pick a fight." Musically, the track is a continuation of, as opposed to a departure from, the band's commercially viable (yet, at times, predictable) material on über-hit Eyes Open. Along with a signature outro consisting of Gary Lightbody's canned vocals, bright, mainstream pop rock abounds. It conjures images of fans a-plenty bouncing along with the tune's pulsating rhythm, which should be gracing arena scoreboards shortly.
Not that any help was required, but acceptance at large will be aided by the single's manner of release, which includes roll-out by way of downloadable Iphone and Ipod Touch application. Bonus material for the oughties, if you will.
With, in all likelihood, a fit-for-primetime television ballad soon to follow, Snow Patrol are likely on the precipice of spectator domination.
