As a rule I've always made it a standard policy of rubbishing the efforts
of those younger than myself. As my years advance and my hopes and dreams
of pop stardom recede as dramatically as my hairline, the only comfort left
to me is crushing the hopes of young, up and coming whipper-snappers, but
try as I might I just can't find it in my heart to slate this young Scandinavian's
work.
It jangles in all the right places, his vocals sound yearning without
being mawkish and there's a gorgeous naiveté to the lyrics. Hailing from
the icy wastes of Norway, Sondre Lerche makes beautifully warm perfect pop
that belies his tender years.
Sounding much like a Norweigian Badly Drawn
Boy, Sleep on Needles is another slice of bittersweet, laid-back folk
pop from his recent album Faces Down. The only room for complaint I can
find is that there are even better tunes on the album that I believe would
have made even better singles.
