Despite starting like the theme tune for a Channel 4 drama, Liverpool quintet The Sonic Hearts' debut single, Hold On, really takes off. With just three minutes and nine seconds to make up your mind, first impressions count. A little bit of swirly organ over some jangly guitar is a very welcome addition to what could be just another British indie band trying to stand its ground among the Views and Ghosts of this year.

The raspy vocals of Sean Francis Butler are supported by some lush harmonies, including the feminine touch from Kirsty Donaldson, which work nicely together. In fact, everything works together nicely, but nice makes it a little unmemorable. It sounds like drummer Stu Carswell could have some real get up and go up his sleeve, but he needs to shine through a bit more. Currently, his contribution is a bit lost in the background.

It's a pleasant enough introduction to the group, despite the over production - if melodic, chirpy and cheery pop is your cup of tea, this might be a suitable mug.
