Soulsavers are Ian Glover and Rich Machin, and though their name implies a cheesy disco/house act, Kingdoms Of Rain turns out to be the chalk to that cheese. Co-written by and featuring Mark Lanegan, it is a truly wonderful, timeless song that offers something of a requiem to its subject.
"Are there halos in your hair, or diamonds shining there?" is Lanegan's opening, subterranean intonation. But the black lyrics ("the rain beats down like death") become strangely upward looking, dressed in radiant guitar lines.
The accompanying track Jesus Of Nothing has a subtle electronic dressing, its ominous beat underneath showing signs of restlessness but again unusually inspiring. If this standard is maintained, then forthcoming album It's Not How You Fall, It's The Way You Land is going to be something special indeed.
