Scottish duo Speedway have ensured themselves attention with their cover version of Christina Aguilera's excellent Genie in a Bottle. Although this is a double A-side, the pleasant enough home-grown track Save Yourself will remain relatively unnoticed in the Aguilera-related hype.
Singer/guitarist Jill Jackson and drummer Jim Duguid have abused the harmonic structure of Genie in a way that fits in with current trends (such as Richard X's Being Nobody). On top of this the tempo has been upped, and the whole thing moved into the realm of fast-n-lite chugging rock.
Surprisingly this simple cover captures a pop spark, and rocks out even on a number of repeated listens. A shame it's overshadowing Speedway's own song, but overall it's a good career move.
