If the geek shall inherit the earth, they'll do it to the sound of this. Put another way, if they ever decide to remake Apocalypse Now! and replace the American forces with an army of nerds, the central helicopter attack scene would most probably be soundtracked by The Spinto Band. "Charlie don't know what the square root of 144 is... I love the smell of binary in the morning...", etc, etc.
The relentless, "aw-shucks" whimsicality gets on your nerves after a while. While someone like Brendan Benson does the bittersweet lovelorn loser with enough charm and appeal that you sympathise with his plight, The Spinto Band pretty much don't.
Which leaves Direct To Helmet looking a bit exposed. Because without a protected layer of likability, you're just left with a bunch of wimps whining on about something or other while occasionally making plinky-plonky sounds on a xylophone. The horror... the horror...
