How was it a good idea to start a song with a sample of a dial-up modem connecting to the Internet? And before this superfluous electronic fanfare does the noble thing and makes itself scarce, it ushers in a verse compiled of a barrage of irritating synths that gratingly vie for position on their journey to creating one of 2008's most annoying riffs.
The vocals are lacking, the lyrics unimaginative, and while Meet Me In The Middle has clearly plumped for the cheery pop meringue of the songwriting banquet, it has ended up sounding trite, contrived, and more concerned with sounding trendy than sounding good.
The truth is, there are a lot of other bands making this kind of synth-laden, electro-indie pop, and doing it far better than Sportsday Megaphone. This just sounds like bandwagon jumping. Deserved of mention, however, is the synth riff in the middle eight, which actually steals the aforementioned title, awarded to the aforementioned verse. As mentioned, this is best avoided.
