On the CD single sleeve, Steve Edwards looks ever so slightly like Julian Clary (complete with smeared boot polish/ mascara). But don't let that put you off...One By One is the New Zealander's first single off his yet-to-be-released debut album Fish Out of Water. And it's definitely - 101 % - worth a listen.
The song's strongest attribute by far is the imagery invoked by its lyrics. Lines like, "building the highest temple will not bring you faith". Nice stuff, especially when sung by the Kiwi's Robbie Williams-like voice.
Having already made Single of the Week on BBC Radio 2, with Ken Bruce and co. donning their pom-poms cheering G-O S-T-E-V-E in repetition, Mr. Edwards is off to a great start. Here's hoping the album is just as good.
