Despite this bright, slick and catchy debut, Stoner seem set to have one giant barrier to overcome - their truly awful name. But rest assured, behind the cover does not lurk the next punk or hard rock sons of dorks. In fact, Stoner present an alluring mix of soul and pop with this single, even doing justice to a recent critical appraisal that the three-piece have "Paul Simon's ear for a melody".
Singer Des describes bumping into a figure from his past, taking us on a trip down memory lane, made very listenable by his emotionally charged vocal work, which makes even the thought of watching Top Of The Pops on a Thursday seem the height of romance.
With a simple and direct pop formula and hints in the sound towards Maroon 5 (although slightly more downbeat) this seems a solid enough effort on which to build. The song would remain static if it were not for subtle changes in vocal work from Des, shifting the chorus from; "It seems like it was only yesterday" to; "After all this time, you still turn me on". It is minor ingenuity such as this that adds that touch of class and separates Stoner from their powerfully dull contemporaries.
