By rights, this should be brilliant. The two girl bands in the country who have made manufactured pop listenable again, joining forces on a cover of the song that made rap and rock a respectable hybrid. Surely, nothing can go wrong?
Sadly, as we all know, neither Girls Aloud nor Sugababes do very good cover versions. The former, despite making some of the best pop music of the last four years, have a regular habit of massacring old songs by the likes of The Pretenders and The Pointer Sisters, while Sugababes have tried to gain some 'indie cred' by covering Arctic Monkeys and Hard-Fi to predictably disastrous effect.
It's a similar story here - all the excitement and originality of the Aerosmith original has disappeared, and both sets of bands fail to inject any passion into the vocals. Heidi, Keisha and Amelle just about shade it as they're the better singers of the two bands, but it's still a pretty poor effort. The sad thing is that if Xenomania, the songwriters behind both band's best moments, had written an original song that played to both sets of girls' strengths, then we could have a classic on our hands. As it is, this is yet another uninspired novelty record for the admittedly laudable cause of Comic Relief. Send them a cheque instead.
