As someone who loved the first two albums from the monkey-faced trio better known as Supergrass, this is like some kind of hideous nightmare. It's like they've turned in to a John Lennon tribute band, but while there's a definite Beatles-y vibe to this song the biggest parallel, worryingly, is between the combined pattern of piano and bass on this track, and the Postman Pat theme song.
The harmonies are rather Beach Boys-esque, and it just seems plain wrong that a band who were so eccentric, energetic and jovial in the mid-nineties have turned in to such an apparently derivative bunch of yawn-popsters. It's like they've turned in to Hal or something. Perhaps there comes a time in any band's career when they have to just chill out and go mellow for a while, but let's hope they get over this phase quickly and get back to being endearingly chirpy, British and downright insane. Why buy this when you could probably get the About A Boy soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy going cheap in a sale somewhere?
Not so much supergrass as just ordinary, run-of-the-mill, grows-in-your-garden grass, without even the odd daisy to brighten things up. Who'd have thought the song title was actually a reference to a school grade rather than a musical note?
