The Sweet Chap - Girl With The Curl / Superman 3 (Protest)
UK release date: 28 February 2005
So the music industry is dragged kicking and screaming into a new era. In recent weeks, for the first time ever, mobile ringtones and downloadable tunes both outsold the single. It really is the start of a new era, and major labels must be positively shitting themselves at the sudden availability of music via fair means or foul.
The Sweet Chap will be releasing this double A side single as a download (quite how a download can be a double A side is anyone's guess...) and a real peach it is too. Ramshackle funk lines and drum patterns merge with menacing samples and a folk sensibility that brings to mind Beck and Stephen Jones. In fact it is Jones of Baby Bird that most resembles Sweet Chap's approach on this single.
He appears to revel in the freedom that his chosen recording style has granted him, flipping between genres with ease. There's no telling what The Sweet Chap might do over the course of an entire album. Jones created a minor sensation with his self released albums (remember when they were selling for well over £100 each?), and with material as strong as these songs, The Sweet Chap could well follow in his footsteps while putting the boot in on the floundering single.
