They say that pop eats itself, that trends keep coming around, and there's definitely some truth to that. In the case of The Tacticians we find ourselves back at the birth of Britpop. No, not the loud Northern Monkey lot. The Tacticians have more in common with the more genteel art loving, cup of tea drinking Southerners.
It has already been pointed out, but The Tacticians are in thrall to the likes of The Kinks, and to some degree (although it doesn't tie in with the previously mentioned geography) Shack's Mick Head. To a degree this is true, and Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys is quite simply a fine indie pop single. There's a basic strummed acoustic guitar, and a reasonable stab at a rousing chorus complete with chiming xylophone. There are even references to the likes of James Dean, and Charles Bukowski (One of the authors who writes. Short sentences. And who you never read. But pretend you do. Rock Stars talk about him. A lot.) So that should keep the intelligentsia of the music press happy.
Infectious tune though it may well be this is not going to set the world on fire. Ollie's vocals are hardly breaking any new ground, and there's little bite or passion in his delivery. The song itself is clever and catchy, but it points to a band that may not have quite enough depth or personality to make a big impression.
