This could be the song that finally brings Teddy Thompson mainstream recognition. For too long a talent that has gone unheard, he follows his delightful country covers album Up Front & Down Low with a ridiculously catchy slice of surf pop that has Radio 2 hit written all over it.
Notoriously dour in live performances (he has inherited a lot of his father Richard Thompson's drier than dry wit), In My Arms sees Teddy casting off the shackles and rocking out with a deceptively simple country pop tune that worms its way into your brain and refuses to go away. The middle section introduces a delightful Hammond Organ riff, which in the accompanying video is the cue for Rufus Wainwright to make one of his trademark cameo appearances.
Richard Hawley has proved that a modern update on the Roy Orbison sound can be commercially successful in a chart scene dominated by urban music. Teddy Thompson deserves to be the next in line.
