Something is going on in the world of Indie, my friends. It appears that the world is regressing, that all those old bands we all used to know and love are coming back. It's like an invasion of floppy fringed zombies out there. First there was The Wedding Present, then The House Of Love. What next - Slowdive?
Don't panic - Slowdive aren't coming back, but ex-Slowdive man Simon Scott is, with his new band Televise. If Shoegazing wasn't your thing, and Mark Gardiner did nothing for you at all, then it's entirely possible Televise will pass you by completely as well. Opener Outside Out takes the Ride blueprint for a cracking single and expands upon it. With the exception of the fuzz around it's midriff, it's a mile away from the Shoegazing extravaganza we were expecting.
Let Me Go Down redresses the balance though; sounding positively stoned and strung out. Guitars steeped in delay hang in the air like thick tendrils of smoke while Scott's voice leads you gently to the point where the song explodes like a forest fire. If I Told You is similarly laid back. It fogs the brain, but still manages to bring to mind The Byrds and My Bloody Valentine. Against all the odds Televise have managed to make Shoegazing sound like a decent proposition again.
