They may never have been the hippest band around, but Texas have been purveyors of tasteful soulful pop for nearly 20 years now, so are obviously doing something right.
Getaway is another showcase for Sharleen Spiteri's gloriously warm and rich vocals and is another example of Texas doing what they do best. The opening piano riff is very reminiscent of Tears For Fears' Pale Shelter, and although the song isn't as instantly memorable as some of their previous singles, after a few listens the song's soaring chorus soon seduces its way into your heart. Best of all, there's no ill advised rap interlude, which so memorably marred the otherwise excellent Carnival Girl.
The forthcoming album isn't due out until October, but this will certainly keep the radio schedulers happy for the next few months - the usual slice of class from Ms Spiteri and company.
