Tindersticks - Boobar Come Back To Me / Tout L'Amour (Beggars Banquet)
UK release date: 29 September 2008
Boobar Come Back To Me, one of the highlights of April's excellent Hungry Saw album, is presented live here; taken from the Tindersticks' recent Royal Festival Hall show.
Sung, as are all Tindersticks songs, by Stuart Staples in the club style, it initially follows the studio version to the letter. Which is no bad thing: as we've come to expect, it's elegant, organ-led melancholia at its best. As music to weep into your pint to, it doesn't get much better than this.
But after a couple of minutes it erupts into a strangely lively call-and-response passage between Staples and his backing singers: more effective live than on record, one suspects. And Tout L'Amour, a re-working of All The Love (also from The Hungry Saw), feels more like a GCSE translation exercise than an impassioned Gallic torch song, mainly thanks to a slightly ropey French accent.
Available only as a limited 7' or download, this is a pleasing curio for Tindersticks completists and collectors; but for the rest of us, sticking with the album versions will most likely suffice.
