It seems to have become utterly cool to namedrop the 11 and 12 year old duo of Tiny Masters Of Today recently. Karen O loves them, CSS and Liars both love them (and have remixed this single), and the drummer for John Spencer Blues Explosion, Russell Simmins, has produced their debut album.
So, two pre-teen kids playing grungey, loud rock music eh? What's not to love? Well, everything to be honest. Hey Mr DJ is a truly terrifying record, and I don't mean that in a good way. It's two minutes of the most tuneless, monotonous warbling you'll hear all year, and the lyrics consist mostly of the phrase "hey Mr DJ, turn up that music" repeated over and over again until you want to stab a pencil into your eardrums.
Let's face it, if Tiny Masters Of Today were in their late teens/early 20s, nobody would be listening to this. It's not even good in an ironic 'oh dah-ling, this is so cute' way. It's just bad. Say what you like about Hanson, but at least Mmm Bop was a halfway decent pop tune.
